Virtual Lecture from Professor McCaffrey: April 28, 2020

Today’s lecture is about an ethical transgression that, rightly or wrongly, journalists can get criticized for: insensitivity when covering victims of traumatic events.

The Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics includes the principle, “Minimize Harm,” which carries a warning that pursuing “the news is not a license for arrogance or undue intrusiveness” and journalists should display “compassion for those who may be affected by news coverage. Use heightened sensitivity when dealing with juveniles, victims of sex crimes, and sources or subjects who are inexperienced or unable to give consent. Consider cultural differences in approach and treatment.”

The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT has offered a list of “Tips and Tools” to help journalists cover the pandemic.

Another important list is offered by the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma, which is also concerned that journalists be mindful of the psychological effects they can face when reporting on traumatic events.

Finally, here is a list of notable journalists who have died so far from the virus.
